Senior Staff Psychologist

Position

The University Counseling Service is actively recruiting applicants for a senior staff psychologist position.  We are seeking a candidate who, in addition to being a strong counseling center generalist, will demonstrate skill in and commitment to providing clinical and outreach services to one or more of the following groups: Latino/Latina students, African-American students, and other traditionally underserved students.  The successful candidate will join a team of diverse professionals who are committed to creating and maintaining a multicultural organization and environment.  The position will be filled at entry level or slightly above.  Starting Date:  August 1, 2009.  Initial screening of applications begins on January 30, 2009.  Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.  The University of Iowa is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and specifically invites and encourages applications from persons with diverse backgrounds, especially women and members of ethnic/racial minority groups.

Required Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in counseling, clinical, or school psychology (preferably from an APA-accredited program), or closely related field.
• Satisfactory completion of a pre- or postdoctoral internship or relevant post-degree experience.
• Skill and experience in individual and group treatment with a university/college population, programming and consultation with campus constituencies, and supervision of counseling and psychotherapy.
• Eligibility for licensing as a psychologist in the state of Iowa.

Desirable Qualifications

Demonstrated skill in and commitment to providing clinical and outreach services to one or more of the following groups:

• Latino/Latina students
• African-American students
• other traditionally underserved students

Responsibilities

(1) Provide remedial and developmental counseling and psychotherapy to students; (2) Supervise and participate in the training of interns and graduate students; (3) Develop and deliver structured programs and psychoeducational group presentations; (4) Develop and implement consultative relationships with other University units; (5) Perform additional professional service as individual skills and interests and agency needs indicate; and (6) Demonstrate sensitivity and competency in working with the full range of diverse groups.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Fringe benefits include TIAA-CREF retirement plan, group insurance, major medical insurance.

The Agency and Campus

The UCS was established in 1946 and there are currently eleven senior staff members (including three assistant directors), a project assistant, an intern staff of three, and three clerical/secretarial staff.  The Director also holds an academic appointment in the Counseling Psychology academic program.  The UCS is housed in a spacious facility adjacent to the University's Student Health Service.  The predoctoral internship, which is currently accredited by the American Psychological Association through 2011, has been accredited continuously since 1979.

The University of Iowa. the first public university in the nation to admit men and women on an equal basis, currently has a student population of approximately 30,561.  The University offers undergraduate and graduate programs which are specially recognized in the areas of creative arts, medicine, and space science.  Of the total enrollment, 9% are minority students and 7% are international students.  Approximately 85,000 people live in the cities of Iowa City and Coralville.
