On August 9th, Hillary will participate in an historic forum on issues of importance to the LGBT community with the other Democratic presidential candidates. The forum will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on MTV’s Logo Channel. Watch the forum and cheer for Hillary with the LGBT community.

Senator Hillary Clinton and Former President Bill Clinton will be in Iowa City on July 3rd at 1:00 pm. The Ready For Change Rally will be held at the River Terrace at the Iowa Memorial Union. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Iowa City office at 319.358.5837 or online at www.hillaryclinton.com/iowa. Tickets may also be picked up throughout the weekend at the Iowa City Headquarters located at 353 College Street.

ReEnergizeUS campaign

The Sierra Student Coalition is spearheading the ReEnergizeUS campaign this summer. They are organizing a march to highlight the need to build a clean energy economy for real global warming solutions. The march will commence in Ames on August 2nd and end with a rally at Nollen Plaza in Des Moines on August 5th. They are searching for groups and individuals interested in joining the event, volunteering a bit of time, or helping in other creative ways.

Chris Dodd will be in Coralville on the 4th for the Morrison Park Celebration at 5 p.m. The campaign will also be walking in the Coralville Parade and is looking for volunteers to help out with this event; contact the campaign at 319.247.6030 to get info.

More updates will be made about 4th of July festivities as information comes in. Be on the lookout for your favorite candiate as they will likely have an event over the holiday!

GLBT Pride Parade

The GLBT community is having its annual Pride Parade on Saturday, June 16th. The parade kicks off at College Green Park (600 E. College St) at 11:00 a.m. Come show your support for all of our GLBT friends in Iowa City! Parade will run on E. Washington and S. Johnson streets.

John and Elizabeth Edwards will be in Iowa City for a Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, June 16th. North Liberty Fun Days!

The Johnson County Democrats will be walking in the North Liberty Fun Days Parade on Friday, June 8. Parade lineup starts around 6:30 p.m., with the parade beginning at 7:00 p.m. The JCDems will have lots of signs, candy, water, etc., so all you need to bring is yourself! Lineup is along Stewart and Cherry Streets in North Liberty...call me (Amanda- 319.631.1112) if you need directions to get there. It would be really great if we could get a student turnout for this!!

The Journal of Gender, Race, and Justice will host its 11th annual symposium on October 13-14, 2006 at the University of Iowa College of Law's Boyd Law Building. The 2006 symposium, One Act, Ten Years, Thousands of Families: Welfare Reform in Contemporary America, will examine the effect of welfare reform on American families. Senator John Edwards will deliver the keynote address and will focus

Volunteers Needed!

Hey everyone,

The Absentee Ballot Courier training is this Saturday, September 23rd
at 12:30 in the IMU in the Illinois room. It technically lasts until
3:30 but we don't anticipate it to last that long at all.

This is the most important date before the election because we need
help in picking up 14,000 early votes. The training is mostly a
formality, because you need to be certified by the Johnson County
Auditor to pick up other peoples votes. You will also be schooled on
the legality of what you can and cannot do with someones ballot.

I know it is on a game day, but it is an away game and you will be
free to step out to check the stats if need be. There will also be
light refreshments and snacks.

If you absolutely cannot make it on saturday there is a secondary date
on Sept. 24th at 2pm at party headquarters (353 east college street,
corner of college and gilbert)

United Way Volunteer Dinner

We have a meeting coming up on Thursday, Sept. 14th!
However, we have made a slight change. Instead of having a meeting at
the IMU, we are going to be serving dinner at the United Way Shelter
House on Gilbert St. This is a great opportunity to help out Iowa
City. This requires us to make dinner at an off-site location,
transport food and help serve it. We need to have everything delieved
and ready to go by 7:00p.m. So, we will be gathering at my apartment
at: 420 S Van Buren St. starting at 5:00 PM. If you can't come right
away, that's completly fine. Join us whenever your schedule allows.
We need as much help as possible for this event as we are supposed to
cook for 30-40 people, and I am extemely deficient in the skill of cooking! In
addition to cooking, we will be going over future events, so please
come. If you want to come and help, please email me anytime from now

1. Our UDEMS VP is Jesse Tangkhpanya, and he is also a field organizer
for the Iowa Democratic Party. He is working hard on getting out the
vote on campus this fall, and whether you have ten minutes or ten

2. Volunteer/Internship Opportunity with Loebsack for Congress

If you're looking for a chance to work in a political campaign this
fall, Loebsack for Congress wants you! Dave Loebsack is running
against Jim Leach, the 30-year incumbent Republican Congressman for
the our area. It's an exciting race given the national trends this
year.

Students are needed for all sorts of volunteer activities -
telephoning, mailings, events, research - you name it. And UI students
can get internship credit towards graduation. For information on
volunteering, contact Tyler Wilson, twilson@loebsackforcongress.org,
or 351-3283, or stop in at the office, 385 E. College St.

3. SEPT 9: JOHNSON COUNTY BBQ: This is an annual fundraiser for the
Johnson County Democrats. Traditionally, UDEMS attends in order to
volunteer and help raise money for JC DEMS. This year Governor
Vilsack will be speaking, along with various state candidates.
Students can either purchase a half price ticket or volunteer 2 hours
for the BBQ. The volunteering can either be outreach phone calls,
set-up before the BBQ begins, or during the first two hours of the
BBQ. If students would like to make calls, please contact Alicia
Trimble at 337-VOTE or AliciaMTrimble@yahoo.com. If students would
like to volunteer from 2pm to 4pm or from 4pm to 6pm on the BBQ day,
they should contact Amy Green at amy-green-1@uiowa.edu or 629-5180.
This is an away game football Saturday, but the game will be shown on
a big screen TV at 2:30. The event will be in North Liberty, but feel
free to contact Jessica Ellerbach at jessica-ellerbach@uiowa.edu for
ride information.

4. SEPT. 17: HARKIN STEAK FRY: This is an annual fundraiser for Sen.
Harkin. This year Sen. Obama from Illinois will be speaking. The
event is outside of Des Moines, but rides can be available by
contacting jessica-ellerbach@uiowa.edu. Regular tickets cost $25, but
students have the opportunity to purchase tickets at a discounted rate
of $15. If you'd like more information or would like to buy a ticket,
contact jessica-ellerbach@uiowa.edu.

5. OCT. 6: HOMECOMING PARADE: This year we will be entering a spot in
the Homecoming Parade along with the Johnson County Democrats. We
want as many students as possible to participate with us. We currently
need some ideas and as many people as possible to put together a
float. Let us know if you are interested in walking or helping us put
this event together.

6. OCT. 14: JEFFERSON-JACKSON DINNER: This is an annual fundraising
event in Des Moines for the Iowa Democratic Party. In the past we
have gotten student tickets, and we are currently working on that
again this year. President Clinton is scheduled to be a keynote
speaker.

7. OCT. 21: BAR CRAWL: We are currently working on having a bar crawl
for this day. If you are interested in helping us out, just let us
know.
