Internationally renowned child labor activist Kailash Satyarthi will speak to teachers and others committed to the eradication of exploitative child labor on Monday, July 26 at 7 p.m. in the Amos Dean Ballroom of the Iowa City Sheraton Hotel. Satyarthi's talk is free and open to the public, but seating is limited to the first 300 people. To reserve seating, contact Girija Mahajan at the UI Center for Human Rights (UICHR), 319-335-3900. Child Labor Activist Kailash Satyarthi Attacked During Rescue of Children in Great Roman Circus

Eminent Child Labour activist and Chairperson of Global March Against Child Labour, Global Campaign for Education and SACCS/Bachpan Bachao Aandolan Kailash Satyarthi was attacked brutally while leading a group of activist and parents to rescue some children from circus in Colonelganj Tehsil of Gonda District in Uttar Pradesh, North India today. Acting on complaints of 11 parents and accompanied by 4 parents (two mothers and two fathers) Satyarthi approached the district administration which reluctantly assigned the Sub Divisional Magistrate to conduct a raid in the Great Roman Circus along with Satyarthi. The Great Roman Circus was camping in Colonelganj, District Gonda. There was reluctance on part of the District Magistrate presently posted in Gonda District. Local teen to travel to child-labor confab

14-year-old Kendra's dedication has resulted in an invitation as a youth delegate to the World Congress on Child Labor in Florence, Italy, next week. She plans to join Chivy Sok, the deputy director of the UI Center for Human Rights, for the 10-day trip. Kendra is one of six students from the United States who will participate in the event.

Three local individuals will bring their voices, visions and artwork to the World Congress on Child Labor May 10-13 in Florence, Italy. Kendra Halter, an eighth-grade student at South East Junior High School in Iowa City, and Chivy Sok, deputy director of the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR), will participate in this international event, which will bring former child laborers and youth activists from around the world together to strengthen youth participation in decision- and policy-making on child labor advocacy. The local members of Children Helping Innocent Laborers Democratically were honored Tuesday night for their selfless efforts during the First Annual Youth Human Rights Award Ceremony. CHILD, organized by students at Lucas Elementary School in Iowa City, helped raise money for and promote awareness about the problem of child labor.

'Stolen Childhoods' Child Labor Film Debuts In Iowa April 28

"Stolen Childhoods," a feature documentary on global child labor, will premiere at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28 at the Buchanan Auditorium, Room W10 in the John Pappajohn Business Building on the University of Iowa campus. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Len Morris, the film's producer/director; Sonia Rosen, founding director of the U.S. Department of Labor's International Child Labor Program; and Chivy Sok, project director of the Child Labor Research Initiative and deputy director of the UI Center for Human Rights. Sok to speak about trafficking in Asia at Michigan State University

Chivy Sok, Deputy Director of the UI Center for Human Rights and Project Director of the Child Labor Research Initiative will speak at Michigan State on "Trafficking in Asia: Borderless Slavery" on March 16, 2004 at 5:30 pm in 303 International Center on the NSU campus. She will focus on the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation in the Asian region.

A group of Iowa City fifth and sixth grade students who are working to raise awareness about abusive child labor practices around the world will meet Wednesday, March 3, at the University of Iowa law school to help Kendra Halter, an eighth-grade student at Southeast Junior High School, prepare for the first Children's World Congress on Child Labor. Five New Countries Added to Child Labor Database

The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) is pleased to announce that another five countries have been added to the Child Labor Research Initiative Database. Laws related to child labor from the Czech Republic, Paraguay, Russia, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe are now available. The laws are available in English and in the original language. With this addition, there are now 15 countries in the database.

Chivy Sok, the Deputy Director of the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights and the Project Director for the University's Child Labor Research Initiative has been invited to speak at Penn State University on January 20. Sok will deliver a talk entitled "Striving for 'A World Fit for Children': The Global Struggle Against Child Labor" as part of the university's Child Rights Day of Social Justice Week. Her talk is sponsored by Rescue Childhood, Penn State's Campus Initiative for UNICEF and patron of student-led grassroots projects in developing countries. UI Database Collects National Child Labor Laws From Around World

Information about child labor laws in 10 countries is now searchable online in a child labor legislative database created by the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR). The database (http://clri.uichr.org/projects/database) was created as part of the UICHR's Child Labor Research Initiative, which is funded by a $1.2
million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It contains the child labor-specific text of laws from nations around the world, which can be searched by country and category/topic.

CLRI Legislative Database Now Open

The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) is pleased to announce the opening of its Child Labor Research Initiative (CLRI) Legislative Database. Under contract with the US Department of Labor, the UICHR is compiling national legislation related to child labor from 25 countries. Building an internet database of child labor legislation is a critical step in the worldwide effort to combat child labor. The goal of the database is to be a useful research tool for policy-makers, scholars, and activists. The laws are searchable by country or by category and are available in English and the original language.

UICHR Hosts Colloquium On Child Labor Issues

Nearly two dozen international human rights experts will participate in a research colloquium "Using the Human Rights Framework to Combat Abusive and Exploitative Child Labor" sponsored by the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights July 8 to 10. The colloquium is a part of the Child Labor Research Initiative, a project funded by a U.S. Department of Labor grant. The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) has won a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to expand the center's Child Labor Research Initiative (CLRI). This brings total federal funding for the project to $1.2 million, including the initial $900,000 grant that got the program started last fall.

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) recently announced that the International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB) signed a contract with the University of Iowa to provide $900,000 for research on abusive and exploitative child labor. Harkin helped secure the funding in last year's Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS) appropriations bill.

Through congressional support led by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) will receive $900,000 in federal funding to establish a UICHR Child Labor Research Initiative (CLRI), a beginning step toward university-based research on abusive and exploitative child labor.
