UICHR names new director

Downing A. Thomas, the associate dean of University of Iowa's International Programs department and professor in the UI Department of French and Italian in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), will become the new director of the UI Center for Human Rights (UICHR) on July 1. Thomas succeeds Burns Weston, professor emeritus of law in the UI College of Law, who has served as the interim director for the past year and is the founding director of the UICHR. Weston, a senior scholar with the center, became interim director after the death of former director Ken Cmiel, professor in the UI Department of History in CLAS. This year, the UICHR provided funding assistance to 10 UI students who chose to spend the summer working at a human rights-related internship, part of the Center's Cmiel and Weston funded internships programs.  For the Summer 2008 Cmiel and Weston funded internship application, please click here.   The now-returned students will be sharing what they learned during their internships:

Making a Difference: Undergraduate Internships in Human Rights Organizations, Katie Sloter, Bogdan Ciochinaru, and Amy Weismann. 7:00-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, Room 1117 University Capitol Centre (UCC), UI campus.
