UICHR Awards Grants to Support Student Internships

The UICHR has awarded grants to seven UI students to support their work in human rights organizations over the summer. Through the Human Rights Funded Internships program, the UICHR awarded funds to students who had already secured internships, either in the United States or abroad. For full press release click HERE.
UI Students Win Weston International Human Rights Essay Competition

A third-year University of Iowa law student and a UI junior are the winners of the UICHR first-annual Burns H. Weston International Human Rights Essay Competition. Mary Sevandal won the $1,000 prize in the graduate and professional student category for her essay, "Bringing Back the 'Real Iraq': Eliminating Honor Crimes in Post-War Iraq." Neil Peterson, an anthropology and women's studies major, won the $750 undergraduate prize for his essay "Speaking from Behind Closed Doors: World Health Organization, Maternal Health, and Hegemony." UICHR Selects 'When the Emperor was Divine' for Community Reading Project

Johnson County readers will gain new insights on human rights in the United States by participating this fall in the fifth annual "One Community, One Book-Johnson County Reads" project, sponsored by the UICHR. The center, in conjunction with representatives from other sponsoring organizations from Iowa City, Coralville and the UI, has selected "When the Emperor was Divine" (Anchor, 2003) by Julie Otsuka for its fall 2005 project.
