About Us

The University of Iowa Fencing Club practices and promotes the sport of Olympic-style fencing. Although we are a University student organization, membership in the club is open to faculty, staff, and the public. Our practices are open, and we invite experienced fencers of all skill levels to come and participate. We also enjoy introducing beginners to the challenge of this demanding sport, but we do recommend that you first seek the instruction offered in the class described under Meeting Times on the left. Observers seeking a closer look at fencing are welcome as well (please make prior arrangements if you plan on attending in a sizeable group). Club dues are $40 per semester or $60 for a year.

The University of Iowa Fencing Club is a member of the United States Fencing Association (USFA). Club members are not required to hold individual USFA memberships in order to participate, but individual USFA membership is usually a requirement for fencers wishing to enter local, regional, or national tournaments. The club belongs to the USFA's Iowa Division, which in turn is part of the Midwest Section. The competitive fencing season in the Midwest runs roughly from September through July. During this time, many tournaments of widely varying size and competitive quality are to be found.

Young fencers are encouraged to participate, but parents are reminded that we are a fencing club, not a fencing school. Fencers of any age in the club are expected to be responsible and self-sufficient. As a general rule, the minimum age is 14, although younger fencers with significant previous fencing experience may receive additional consideration. A parent or legal guardian is required to sign a release form for any fencer under 18 years of age.
