Club Practice

Room 462/472 Field House

Regular practices are held twice per week throughout the whole year. These sessions are informal, and largely self-guided. Stretching, drilling, and warming up are encouraged, but are typically not done en masse. Practices are characterized by free-fencing and bouting with all three weapons. Three or four electric setups will normally be available, with space remaining for dry fencing. The club facilitates practice by providing members with electric and non-electric weapons, as well as necessary safety equipment. However, members who wish to fence competitively in tournaments are expected to rely primarily upon their own equipment.

Beginner's Class (Begins 9/1/2009)

North Gym of the Field House

During the fall term, a course is offered for beginners who are seeking an introduction to fencing. The class typically meets once per week for 12 weeks. We encourage anyone without previous fencing experience to complete this class before attending the regular meetings of the club. Club practices are relatively informal, with little structured guidance; fencers at practice learn by watching, practicing, and taking informal advice from experienced fencers. In contrast, the fall beginners class offers a structured environment in which new fencers will receive formal instruction on the basics of fencing. This class provides students with the necessary foundation to proceed with fencing in the club, and (hopefully) for many years to come. It also provides the opportunity for newcomers to acquaint themselves with the physical demands of the sport, which most beginners find to greatly exceed their expectations. The cost is $20. Please email hawkeye.fencing@gmail.com to sign up. The class will be closed after the first lesson date.
