The following are biographical sketches of the 2009/2010
UIRA officers and directors.

Lou Crist - Director
Lou Crist retired from the Carver College of Medicine's Continuing
Medical Education Division in 2007 following 35 years of service.
He and his wife, Jan, have two sons. Scott and his wife, Kim, live
in West Lafayette, IN. Todd, his wife, Cheryl, and their two sons,
Sam and Tom, reside in Louisville, CO, which is just outside Boulder.
Lou is a member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club, the Sunrise Optimist
Club, and a radio control model aircraft flying group, the Iowa
City Aerohawks. Both Lou and Jan, as well as their sons and their
sons' wives are graduates of the University of Iowa.
Lou has served as voice of the Hawkeye Marching Band since 1981.
He
also is the public address announcer for the fall Band Extravaganza
and the University's annual Homecoming Parade. Lou was a member
of the UI Marching Band in 1958-59, which included a trip to the
1959 Rose Bowl. He and Jan enjoy traveling to see their sons and
grandsons, to visit friends and spend time in warmer climates of
the country during the winter. Lou values friends and colleagues
who have retired from the UI and strives as a member of the Board
to help plan and initiate interesting and informative programs for
the University's retirees.
Jonathan (Jon) Cryer - Director
Jon is Professor Emeritus from the Department of Statistics and
Actuarial Science. He retired in 2001.
He is married to Judy, and they have two sons and one daughter.
Jon is active in the community, and music groups he plays with
often
perform in retirement homes and at the Senior Center. Among the
instruments he plays are the euphonium and string bass. Along with
Richard Caplan and Jan Nelson, Jon was a member of the trio that
performed for the UIRA at our Annual Banquet last May. He sings
in
the Indigo Blend quartet and the First Methodist Chancel Choir and
Chamber Choir.
Besides his musical activities, he is interested in computers,
bicycling,
and woodworking. Since he retired, he has published several books
and has done limited consulting.
La Vonna Gaunt -
Director
LaVonna retired in 2001 from the UI Business Office, where she
was
Associate Director of Accounting Services. She is currently serving
as
the UIRA’s membership officer.
LaVonna and her husband, Dennis, who retired from the University
Hygienic Lab in 2004, have two children and two grandchildren.
Daughter Kris is a medical editor at University Hospitals, and son
Michael is a registered landscape architect in West Des Moines.
Since 2004, LaVonna has worked for the Johnson County Auditor’s
Office for most elections. This includes serving as a precinct election
official for early voting and on election days. Her other interests
include genealogy, gardening and bowling.
Penny Hall - President
Penny is Associate Professor Emeritus from the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders. She retired in June 2007.
She is married to Jim and they have two sons. Chris is a high
school social studies teacher in Davenport and Greg is a policeman
in Tipton, Iowa.
Penny has been active in the community and is currently President
of the Pilot Club of Iowa, a local service organization. She once
played bagpipes and is working with an alum group to preserve the
history of the UI Scottish Highlanders. She is a founding member
of the City Circle Acting Company of Coralville and a member of
the fund-raising committee for the Coralville Performing Arts Center.
While a UI faculty member, she was on the Hancher Advisory Committee
and the Presidential Committee on Athletics.
Penny is interested in reading, theatre, music and the football
Hawks. She also helps Jim with home improvement projects.
She is currently a consultant/reviewer at ACT in the Test Accommodations
Department.
Jean Hood - President Elect
Jean Hood is the UIRA President Elect and chairs the Program Committee.
Until her retirement in 1996, Jean was a Family Life Specialist
for the Iowa State University Extension Service, serving the Cedar
Rapids area. She earned her undergraduate degree from Buffalo State
Teachers College, part of the SUNY system in Buffalo, NY, and her
Master's degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Her husband,
Al Hood, is a Professor Emeritus in the College of Education. Al
is very active with the Senior College Committee, and was recently
re-elected to the Emeritus Faculty Council. Jean and Al have four
married children living in Texas, Florida, Maryland, and Cedar
Rapids, as well as 11 grandchildren -- with one more on the way.
Jean has been involved in a number of community organizations,
including serving as General Manager for the Hancher Showcase, the
sales area/gift shop of Hancher Auditorium. Currently she is co-chair
of the Photo Directory Project, and serves on the Membership and
Endowment Committees for her church. Jean also has been active in
Project Green.
Growing hostas in a shade-dominant yard, quilting, and keeping
up with the Hood children and grandchildren are among her hobbies
and interests. She also volunteers at the Unitarian Society of Iowa
City, works at maintaining her physical health which includes swimming,
and enjoys taking courses in the Senior College.
Jane Jakobsen - Secretary
In addition to being a UIRA Director, Jane has been President of
three
UI organizations: Associated University Women, Staff Council, and
Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). Her extensive volunteer
Activities include the Johnson County Lung Association, the Planning
and Zoning Commission of Iowa City, the Ecumenical Towers Board,
being an Elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, and the General
Assembly Council and Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church
(USA).
She is married to James (Jake). Jane and Jake have two children
and
two grandchildren. Janet is Professor of Religion and Women’s
Studies and Director of the Center for Research on Women at Barnard
College. Their son, Tom, is Systems Analyst for his own company.
Granddaughter Emily graduated from the University of Iowa in 2007,
and Grandson Craig is a sophomore at Washington University in St.
Louis.
Her hobbies and interests include travel, volunteering, and reading.
Dwight Jensen - Gray
Hawk Editor
Between 1981 and 1997 when he retired, Dwight was Director of Public
Information and University Relations, Assistant to the Dean of Continuing
Education, and Director of the Center for Conferences and Institutes.
During the Korean War, he served as staff photographer for the
army
newspaper in occupied Austria. After military service, he completed
his journalism studies at the University, was editor of The Daily
Iowan,
married a fellow journalism student, and worked as a reporter for
The Des Moines Register.
In the 1960s, he was chief of staff for Iowa Governor Harold E.
Hughes.
Later in Washington, D.C., he was press secretary for Senator Hughes,
an associate editor for National Journal, and director of public
affairs for the National Governors’ Association. He and his
wife, Pat, also had a publications consulting business in the nation’s
capitol for several years before returning to Iowa City and the
University in 1981.
Dwight and Pat have three children -- two daughters, an insurance
auditor in Boise, ID, and a first-grade teacher in Fredericksburg,
VA, and a son who practices law in Racine, Wis. -- and four grandchildren.
Marion Johnson
- Director (Membership Chair)
Marion Johnson is currently the UIRA’s membership chair.
She retired from the College of Nursing in July 2001 as a Professor
Emerita, having joined the Nursing faculty in 1980 after 12 years
in various clinical and administrative positions at the UI Hospitals
and Clinics. While teaching, she received grant funding to develop
patient outcome measures to evaluate nursing care. Marion still
participates in the work and publications of the research team that
was developed for that project. After retirement, she returned in
a halftime position to develop diversity initiatives within the
College and remained for a year and a half until a full-time person
could be hired.
Marion has three children. Michael Flanigan and his spouse Lori
live in Tipton and work at ACT and Pearsons, respectively. Both
are graduates of the University of Iowa. Kathy Lozich and her husband
Michael live in the Dallas area, where Michael is an attorney. Kathy
has a master’s degree in library science, but is currently
not working outside the home. She is actively involved in their
church and community. Tim Flanigan moved from Kansas City and is
currently living with his mother while attending the University
of Iowa. He is getting a second major in geology to complement his
initial degree in chemistry and plans on continuing in a graduate
program.
Following retirement, Marion served on the Johnson County Visiting
Nurse Association board and the Emeritus Faculty Council. She remains
active in professional organizations related to her interest in
patient outcomes. She also serves on a planning committee for University
Women’s Club and is a member of the Iowa City Foreign Relations
Council and the Center for Nursing Classification and Research at
the College of Nursing.
Marion is active in protecting our environment, wildlife and pets.
She has a miniature Shih Tzu that was rescued from a puppy mill.
An avid Hawkeye fan, she likes to travel, enjoys games and cards
and belongs to a bridge group, canasta group, and scrabble group.
One of her great pleasures has been reading widely in areas that
she was unable to pursue when working.
Joseph Joynt - Treasurer
After a 34-year career at the University of Iowa, Joe retired in
June 2004 as the Manager of UI Payroll. While at the UI, he also
helped establish the Big Ten Payroll Managers Conference and the
Educational Institutions division of the American Payroll Association.
In addition, Joe has made professional presentations regarding payroll
operations, tax payments to individuals and electronic record keeping.
Joe and his spouse, Sandy, have three children. Benjamin lives in
Boston and works downtown for a Houston’s restaurant. Andy
has a marketing degree from Colorado State University and works
at Coralville Wine and Spirits. An expert microbrewer, Andy plans
to start a microbrewery in the Iowa City area. Emily is a teacher
and has a degree in economics from UI She is currently working with
ACT developing curriculum for teaching high school economics.
Joe is an avid golfer, bird watcher, and planter of trees. He
is also a big Hawkeye fan following the sports of rowing and softball
in addition to basketball and football.
His passion for driving cars and the automobile industry got him
into
picking up and delivering vehicles for several dealerships around
the
country. In addition, he often works for the Johnson County Auditor
as
a poll worker.
Feather Lacy - Director

Dick Stevenson
- Past President
Dick retired in 1998 as Professor Emeritus of Finance. Among his
administrative duties at Iowa, he was Chair of the Department of
Finance for eight years and Acting Treasurer of the University during
the mid-1980s.
He is married to Sheila and they have three children. Daniel is
Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire. Maura is a vice-president in human resources at Starbucks
in Seattle. Susan is a fifth grade teacher in Bloomington, Illinois.
Dick and Sheila have three grandchildren.
Dick is an avid biker and has been on 26 RAGBRAIs. He also enjoys
the various musical events available in the Iowa City area.
As a valuation expert in the financial economics area, he provides
litigation support for the legal profession and is also President
of Stevenson Investment Management, Inc.
