Each student will participate in one of three introductory Workshops during the first part of the summer, and then move on to work in a small research group with one of the UI professors.

After the morning workshop, students will meet each afternoon with graduate students (current VIGRE Trainees, working as research mentors) to work on problems (in groups of various sizes) and discuss workshop material.

During the second part of the summer, the students will work in groups of approximately 3, each group associated to one of our faculty, and supported by one of the two Heartland Partner instructors, several VIGRE Trainees, or Alliance staff. To ease the transition, we expect to start the research projects early so they will overlap for some time with the workshops.
