Seeking a means by which Black music could be presented to the community and students of the University of Iowa, La Jeune Wright inspired the formation of the VOICES OF SOUL in the the fall of 1970. She also served as the first leader and musical director. Initially there were only seven members in Voices.

In 1973, Gary Sumpter assumed the position of director, and he later shared that position with Raleigh Williams. Gary was also the primary conductor of VOICES, and he was assisted by Yolanda Wallar and Florence Robinson when he assumed the position of piano player.

The current director, Ron Teague, has been associated with Voices since 1985. He is the piano player as well.
