VOICES OF SOUL is a student organization dedicated to the maintenance of the musical heritage of African-American people.

The purpose of VOICES is to provide a means by which Black musical culture can be nurtured and enhanced. They are considered to be the center of Black musical enrichment for Iowa City -- creating an atmosphere which not only allows students to share their musical cultural awareness with each other, but also helps students expand their awareness of the rich traditions of Black music.

Voices also extends its role to include community service. Believing that the community has much to offer in terms of musical style and interpretation, VOICES is able to present its audience with a diverse assortment of Black music.

During its initial inception, VOICES attempted to show the need for the acceptance of Black music in the Iowa City area. The group spent many long hours rehearsing so their finished product would be a total and complete reflection of what Black music is all about.

Today, VOICES has attained a recognition that cannot be hindered by stigmatic stereotypes of Black music. Their performances are rich with cultural traditions, which help to show that VOICES OF SOUL is a powerful musical force at the University of Iowa.
