GENERAL INFORMATION

This is an educational trip to learn about the realities and history of El Salvador and liberation theology. The delegation will learn through experience and daily small group reflections.


The guides and coordinators for our group in El Salvador include: The Parish Team in Berlin, El Salvador; Rev. Bob Cook, original Mission Co-worker and Kathy Mahler, current Mission Co-worker. The Wesley trip coordinator is Rev. Marsha Acord.


Travelers will participate in several preparation meetings including watching the film Romero. When we return we will lead worship with the Wesley community, sharing our stories and experiences.


We will also connect the Wesley community with Erick, the young man for whom Wesley provides a scholarship to attend college in San Miguel, El Salvador.


Activities (tentative)   

  1. orientation to the historical, political and social realities of El Salvador, by the Center for International Solidarity in San Salvador


  1. visit sites of interest in San Salvador (capital city of El Salvador) including the National Cathedral, the Divinia Providencia, the University of Central America, the National Legislative Assembly


  2. live with Parish Team at Casa Pastorale in Berlin (rural mountain village)


  1. visit water projects constructed by the Parish Team and the Des Moines Presbytery in the cantons of San Filipe Arriba and Corozal


  1. visit a Coffee Finca (plantation) at Cerro Verde where Don Justo Coffee is grown and processed, and visit toastaria in Berlin


  1. visit natural sites of interest like volcanoes and geological formations


  1. spend a day at the beach


  1. worship and reflection


  1. tour local marketplaces


  1. visit Erick and his family in San Miguel


  1. visit marginalized schools and other community development projects


Costs   

Cost to students $1,000


immunizations are required

Consult family doctor, Student Health Service Travel Clinic. You will need to plan immunizations well in advance.


Passports are Required

Apply well in advance of trip-12 weeks
