Meet Michael and Elyssia - WISE Represents Two Families at Dance Marathon

Dance Marathon was yet again an amazing success for everyone involved in the $1 Million + fund-raising event held February 1-2. As always, an impressive number of WISE women volunteered for DM, and this year a few of our women represented two amazing (and adorable) little children and their families. Below is a picture of Michael (is his dad's arms), his family, and a group of WISE women who met them during the event. Over the months leading up to DM, Michael and his family met with Chelsey McClellan and Stacey Hamilton, two first-year WISE students. The second picture below is of 2-year old Elyssia and Sam Sturch, another first-year WISE student. Elyssia was not able to attend DM. Michael and Elyssia, we welcome you to the WISE family - you're in our thoughts and hearts!

UI Women In Science And Engineering Program Sends Advice Into Space

University of Iowa News Release, March 14, 2007

When NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson rides aboard a Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station in October, she will carry with her words of wisdom from the University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program. Read the full story...

UPDATE on 'WISE in SPACE' Program - October 1, 2007

Thanks to the generosity of Mt. Ayr, Iowa native and NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson, a little piece of WISE will be heading into space this month! We are honored to be one of only three Iowa entities that have artifacts accompanying Peggy on her upcoming mission. We didn't realize until this summer that Peggy is actually the Commander of this mission! What an amazing accomplishment for her.

Last month we received a communication from NASA informing us that we had been cleared to become one of Peggy’s ‘family and friends’ network which allows us to access her personal web communications and see many activities that are not available for public viewing. We hope to share these experiences with our WISE Women (especially those in Physics and Astronomy) to give them a window into the life of a working NASA astronaut. If you are interested in the schedule of event on Peggy’s ‘family and friends’ network, just contact Chris and request one.
