Certificate in Sexuality Studies

Undergraduate students may earn a certificate by completing the following requirements.

Students must earn 21 semester hours of credit with a grade-point average of at least 2.00 in courses chosen from the list of required and elective courses approved for the certificate.

There is no minor available in Sexuality Studies at this time. The Certificate Program is the only curricular concentration in Sexuality Studies.

The Sexuality Studies Program is in the process of merging with Women’s Studies to create a new Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies Department.  We will continue to accept new certificate applications during the merger process.  Please check back to this website to keep informed of these exciting developments and changes to the program!

Requirements for the certificate:

Course work must include both of the following courses:

  • 131:010 Introduction to Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies , 3 s.h.
(students who took 154:110 before 2009 may count that as their Introduction)
  • Capstone Seminar, 3 s.h. This course will be corss-listed, on a rotating basis, with courses offered by departments affiliated with Sexuality Studies. This course will have a SSP number between 154:180 and 154:189
  • The Spring 2010 Capstone Course is 154:157 GENDER, SEXUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS.

Students will complete the remaining fifteen semester hours by selecting courses offered by the Sexuality Studies Program (with the 154 designation) or from the list of approved courses, which vary from year to year. Students may petition to have a course counted which does not appear on the list of approved courses.

In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of sexuality studies, we encourage students to choose their electives from different disciplines.

Courses applied toward the sexuality studies certificate may also be used to complete the General Education Program or to satisfy requirements of a major or minor.

Of the 21 semester hours required for the certificate, at least 12 must be earned at The University of Iowa. Transfer work is evaluated by the Academic Coordinator.

The certificate is awarded only upon completion of a bachelor's degree. Holders of Iowa baccalaureate degrees may return to complete the requirements for a certificate. Holders of baccalaureate degrees from other institutions who are not enrolled in a graduate or professional program at The University of Iowa may apply for admission to the College of Liberal Arts and are awarded the certificate on completion of the requirements.

If you have questions or are working towards a certificate and would like academic advising, please contact Lisa Heineman, the Academic Coordinator of SSP.
