Positions

CENTER
  • performs the draw
  • #1 objective: to defend opposing center
  • makes transition from defense to offense
  • good field vision & space awareness to serve as a connector
  • consistent ball skills
  • possess speed/endurance
DEFENSIVE POSITIONS:

LEFT DEFENSE
  • marks opposing attack wing
  • lines up around circle
  • fastest defender to match speed of attack wings & to recover back on defense & to pick up a free player
  • requires good anticipation & marking skills
  • good blockers
  • capable of shooting from outside
RIGHT DEFENSE
  • marks opposing attack wing
  • lines up around circle
  • fastest defender to match speed of attack wings & to recover back on defense & to pick up a free player
  • requires good anticipation & marking skills
  • good blockers
  • capable of shooting from outside
3rd MAN
  • lines up on circle for the draw & plays in front of cover point
  • objective: to disrupt field play by intercepting & sliding to pick up free opponent
  • blocking skills very important, versatility, good timing, anticipate loose balls & interception opportunities, occasional opportunities to score
COVER POINT
  • plays in front of point
  • responsible for marking 2nd home on attacking team
  • leader of defensive unit
  • good/great communicator & decision maker
  • most competent in all defensive skills
POINT
  • defender closest to the crease who marks the first home on attacking team
  • should be highly trained to defend the crease: great stick checker & shot blocker
  • strong body positioning ability & good decision making skills
OFFENSIVE POSITIONS:

LEFT ATTACK
  • fastest players on field who utilize space & width of midfield
  • speed used for quick transitions & to lead to a fast break
  • makes good decisions about distributing the ball
  • strong shooter & passer
RIGHT ATTACK
  • fastest players on field who utilize space & width of midfield
  • speed used for quick transitions & to lead to a fast break
  • make good decisions about distributing the ball

3rd HOME
  • lines up on circle marked by 3rd man
  • well rounded attack player with strong ball & shooting skills
  • must be able to protect & distribute ball while in transition to offense
  • able to recognize, anticipate & move to open spaces away from the ball to support teammates (this allows many opportunities to score)
  • should be quick to recognize change of possession & to switch to defensive role of marking
2nd HOME
  • dynamic attack player
  • great stick skills
  • often the attack's leader or playmaker
  • stays or gets open & receives passes in order to shoot or redistribute ball
1st HOME
  • plays closest to the goal
  • able to protect & feed ball to others
  • posses excellent cradling, dodging and shooting skills
  • must be able to react to ball & teammates movements
  • has a nose for the goal
  • should be able to cut in limited space & use the crease
