The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will welcome 27 undergraduate women to campus as participants in the 2009 Iowa National Education for Women's (N.E.W.) Leadership program. Iowa N.E.W. Leadership is an intensive 5-day residential institute designed to help undergraduate women develop public leadership skills, learn about civic involvement, and build relationships with women who are involved in public leadership on the local, state, and national level. Developed by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University in 1991, the non-partisan program is conducted at 18 universities nationwide. The University of Iowa joined this network in 2007 and will hold its second institute on May 31 through June 5, 2009.
The participants, chosen by a bi-partisan panel of community leaders, come to the program from colleges and universities all over Iowa. Participants were selected based on a wide range of factors including, but not limited to: individual leadership potential, maturity, ability to deal with challenges, and capacity to reflect on one’s own personal strengths and weaknesses, special interests, unique characteristics or diverse experiences which contribute to the N.E.W. Leadership learning goals, interest in politics, public service or public policy, and a commitment to participate fully in the N.E.W. Leadership institute.
In order to maintain the program's non-partisan integrity, commitment to diversity, and financial accessibility, the Women’s Resource and Action Center offers this program to its participants at no cost. Because of the generosity of our sponsors, acceptance into Iowa N.E.W. Leadership includes all program fees, including food and lodging for the duration of the Institute. Iowa N.E.W. Leadership is open to all undergraduate women attending a two or four year institution in the State of Iowa as well as Iowa residents attending a college or university outside the state.
We congratulate the 2009 Iowa N.E.W. Leadership class and look forward to welcoming them to the program this summer!
