Allison Richards
Allison Richards is a fourth year doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology program at The University of Iowa. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. Allison received her clinical training and provided psychological services at a variety of settings working with a diverse group of clients. She has done individual therapy at a college counseling center, provided gender-specific individual and group therapy within the juvenile justice system, and done intellectual and academic assessments with youth.
While Allison is open to working with any clients, she has most experience with past/present trauma, depression, identity concerns, relationship issues, and life changes.
Allison’s approach to working with clients is highly collaborative in nature. She views her role as helping clients to help themselves in whatever way is appropriate for each client, recognizing the uniqueness of each human being. Her work relies heavily on the therapeutic relationship between counselor and client, which she sees founded on trust, compassion and honesty. Allison believes that therapy is a place for clients to find their voices and develop greater awareness of the current landscape of their lives. Aside from her relationship-oriented approach, Allison also incorporates elements of mindfulness into her work, reminding clients (and herself) that sometimes what is most healing is being with our present moment experience.
