Winter Ski Trips & Activities 2003

Sandy January 5 McBride Field Campus

This will be a ski event with the Iowa City Sierra Club. Call Jim at 338-0005 if you wish to go so Jim can give you directions and/or set you up with a car pool.

Sandy Local Skis at 1pm

Marv Scher has offered to lead a few of the local skis on Sunday afternoons.    These skis will primarily take place at Lake McBride Recreational area, off of Mehaffey Road just north of Mehaffey Bridge.   Other ideas were Kent Park, Finkbine Golfcourse, Fairview Golfcourse, Cedar Rapids groomed parks and    Matsell Bridge (north of C.R.). I noted I have some Northeast Iowa ski information available to anyone interested.    Please, email me lthomae@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu if you'd be willing to volunteer to lead a Sunday 1 p.m. ski. Provide your name, phone number    (or email address) and date(s) of your Sunday(s) preferences.    The ski schedule/contact name/phone number will be placed on our website for each Sunday we have a volunteer.    If there is no snow or temperatures hazardous, there is no ski.

January 17, 18, & 19 Candlelight Root River Ski - Minnesota

Laura Walton is coordinating, and has confirmed, the Candlelight Root River Ski outing on the Root River Trailhead in Preston, Minnesota.   The ski is 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2003. Laura has reserved seven rooms under the name of "University of Iowa Ski Club."   Please call toll-free: 888.378.2896, Country Hearth Inn and mention our club for your reservation.   My room is already reserved!   Rooms have price discounts and I believe the price is $73 for a room with 2 double beds.   If there is no snow or you need to cancel your reservation, you may do so by 4:00 p.m. the day of the event.   This is a fairly new and very comfortable motel with swimming pool, jacuzzi and gas fireplace Lounge.    I expect there may be more information available regarding transportation and ski meet times on our website as the date approaches.    Root River Trail is flat and winds along the Root River and through the woods.   This is a delightful winter ski haven and will provide us with ski opportunities on both days besides the Candlelight Ski.   Trail passes are required and can be purchased at the Trailhead ($2 per day).   For those who are avid skiers, it is possible to ski from Preston to Lanesboro and back.   Lanesboro offers a nice respite before heading back, with restaurants offering soup, sandwiches and warm beverage.
