The Zeta Tau Alpha 5k
In 1992, Zeta Tau Alpha adopted The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as
the Fraternity's national philanthropy. At the 1996 International Convention,
the Fraternity voted to increase ZTA's support of breast cancer awareness by
backing all organizations committed to breast cancer research, education,
screening and treatment.
Each year, members distribute one million waterproof shower cards which identify
how to perform breast self-examinations; volunteer at more than 86 Race for the
Cure® events nationwide; and co-sponsor the Survivor Program for the Race®
series.
Alpha Omicron has continued this commitment by holding the ZTA5K. With the
support of the University of Iowa, UI Greek Community, local Iowa City
businesses, and our family and friends, almost $4000 was raised in the first
year.
We experienced continued success with the second annual ZTA5K on October
21, 2001 where we raised over $6000 for Breast Cancer Awareness. We are extremely
proud of the third ZTA5K because we raised over $13,000.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., was formed in
1982. The stated mission of the Foundation is to eradicate breast
cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education,
screening and treatment. Volunteers around the world work through local
Komen Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure® events to further the
Foundation's mission.
The Komen Foundation runs one of the most innovative, responsive
grant programs in breast cancer today. Each year, the Komen Foundation
awards project grants and fellowships in basic, clinical and
translational research. Since itsinception, the Foundation has awarded
more than 400 research and project grants totaling over $45 million.
In addition to research on a national and international level, Komen Affiliates
fund non-duplicative, community-based breast health education and breast cancer
screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved.
The Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness
walks in the world. Since its origination in Dallas in 1983, the Komen Race for
the Cure® Series has grown from one local race to an international series with
107 Races in 2000. More than one million participants are expected in 2000.
Ninety percent of net revenue supports the Foundation's
mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease through
research, education, screening and treatment. Since its inception, the Komen
Foundation and its Affiliates have raised in excess of $214 million.
